Driving without auto insurance is illegal. If a
driver is found in operation of a car without having any type of
liability cover, they are putting themselves at risk not only of
losing their license, but of paying expensive fines for years to
come. Despite all of this, the temptation to go without insurance
can be somewhat overpowering if you know that you will only be in
possession of the car for a short period of time. That said, it
isn't really worth the legal risks that come with the choice not to
purchase a policy. The good news is that you don't have to purchase
insurance for a full year just to be covered for a few months.
Instead, you can take advantage of a service known a temporary car
insurance. If there is no reason for you to drive your car for a
long period of time, this just might be the ideal solution.
The name is fairly self-explanatory. Temporary car insurance allows
you to insure your car for a short period of time. The period of
cover can be as much as six months, sometimes longer. It can also be
as little as only one twenty four hour period. You have the option
of either paying off the value of the insurance up front, or making
monthly payments to the insurer. Generally, it is less expensive if
you choose to pay for all of the insurance up front.

Other than the amount of time that you receive the cover, there
isn't that much of a difference between shot term car insurance and
long term car insurance. Some people might be concerned about
whether or not they can purchase a comprehensive policy. If they
choose to do so, this is well within their capabilities. Strict
liability policies are also available, as well as collision
insurance. You can also purchase specific types of insurance such as
theft or weather protection. If you want to provide your car with
extra cover for a limited amount of time without affecting your long
term policy, this is the optimal solution for you. You may also be
able to take advantage of extras such as roadside assistance.
Another advantage regarding temporary car insurance is how it is
much simpler to cancel the policy in the majority of cases.
Temporary car insurance doesn't make sense for everybody, but there
are plenty of circumstances in which it makes sense. As an example,
if you have children who are going to college, but need access to a
vehicle when they are home for the summer, it makes sense to sign
them up for temporary car insurance while they are back home. There
is no justification to sign them up for cover for the full year if
they aren't driving. This is simply a waste of money.
Another situation would be if you have a vehicle that you only drive
during certain seasons. If your car is no good for getting around in
the snow, there is no justification to have it insured during the
winter months. You can leave the car at home during this time, and
save yourself the extra money that you would be paying during these
months.
